Children’s Activities and Race Medals unveiled for GRMC Superhero 5K

Calling all superheroes, Garrett Regional Medical Center (GRMC) is sponsoring a Superhero 5K to benefit Cindy’s Fund, a local charity that provides support for cancer patients and their families. The event will be held on Saturday, September 8, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. at Broadford Park in Oakland, Md. In addition to the race itself, a variety of children’s activities will be on site that morning, including a bouncy house, face painting, balloon characters, and a cotton candy station.

First through third place medals will be awarded for males and females across eight age categories. The overall male and female race winner will receive a gift certificate from Loar Auxiliary Gift Shop.

“Cindy’s Fund supports our efforts to provide the best care and support to cancer patients in our community,” said Kendra Thayer, Senior Vice President of Patient Services at GRMC. “A great deal of stress accompanies a cancer diagnosis; not only does the patient and family have to deal with the disease, they also have to deal with a lot of ancillary issues. Financial pressures, getting the patient to their numerous medical appointments, nutritional struggles – it is often overwhelming. Cindy’s Fund is there to help Garrett County families through what is a very, very difficult time. GRMC is happy to help support the organization through our Super Hero 5K. It’s something we hope to do every year.”

Participants in the 5K – both runners and those walking the course - are encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero. All ages are invited to join the race, and families are welcome. First through third place medals will be awarded for males and females across eight age categories. The overall male and female race winner will receive a gift certificate from Loar Auxiliary Gift Shop.

“We’re excited to partner with Cindy’s Fund on what promises to be a fun-filled event for our community,” Thayer added. “We hope to see a lot of families come out in their super hero costumes ready to make a difference.”

Race registration is $20 in advance and $25 on race day. Forms are available on GRMC’s website at https://www.grmc-wvumedicine.org and can be e-mailed to superheroregistration@gcmh.com or mailed to GRMC 5K at 251 N. Fourth Street, Oakland, MD 21550. For more information, please call 301-533-4366.
